‘Utopia’ is a collection of vast, expressive, landscapes and seascapes. The works emphasise the sublime beauty of nature and aim to establish a link between the landscape’s reality and that imagined by its conceiver.

By emphasising aesthetics, the viewer is invited to explore the dynamics of landscape, blurring our assumptions of what landscape means to us. Exaggerated hues and expressive brushstrokes are used to create natural movement and a visual seduction. The works endeavour to convey emotions of calm, warmth and beauty, a glimpse into an ‘Utopia’ like existence. It is these emotions that link to the theme of ‘cosy’, as the paintings transport the viewer to a tranquil beach scene, where they can almost feel the warm sand between their toes. Rather than presenting a factual reality, an illusion of memory is fabricated to conjure the realms of our imagination.

The paintings are made with traditional materials, oil on primed wooden panels. Oil paints give the pieces a rich luminosity and sheen, the blending of the colours on the smooth wood surface convey a dreamlike quality. Several pieces incorporate a textural component depicting the rugged dimensions of the land.
