Sharleen Cu is a multidisciplinary artist with a background of fine arts and digital illustration. Her works play with the art of self-portraiture through mixed media in order to explore the complicated mess that makes up her identity as a Chinese-Filipino living in Australia. Sharleen aims to depict a multiverse of characters, with quirks and colours that reflect her childlike, inner world.
Despite their apparent differences and personal narrative, her works are united by the universal themes of destiny, spirituality, and dualism. She aims to remind the viewer that “oneself” is not truly any “one” at all, but a part of something much more limitless.
Deconstructing Femininity by Sharleen Cu is a series of paintings and sculptures that play on the art of self-portraiture through mixed media in order to explore the complicated mess that makes up her identity as a Chinese Filipino woman. Sharleen’s works relate to the theme of collective resilience by challenging the viewers usual image of a portrait of a woman. Instead of a stereotypical sculpture or painting of a woman’s face and body, her works aim to reimagine what a woman is through abstract interpretations of herself in mixed media. Together, Sharleen’s works can also be seen as a platform for female representation by showcasing her upbringing and experiences as a young female artist.
