Ashton Wastney Nostalgia - Ashton Wastney.jpg

ashton wastney

Nelson raised artist Ashton Wastney began studying design in Wellington before moving to Melbourne in 2018. Basing his painting practice out of his studio in Brunswick, Ashton began exhibiting his oil paintings in galleries around Melbourne in 2020. He approaches his works without pre meditation and uses the medium to communicate methods of understanding the subconscious. Then forming bases of Anatomical and Physiological aspects he instinctively reveals moments of chance and emotions — this embodies a distortion of mental clarity and consciousness.

Nostalgia is an emotional conflict of both sadness and joy, felt from reflecting or being transported to a previous feeling or event. Ashton has channeled this to depict just how much we show the reflection and where that places us mentally. His series of works Displays moments of these emotions as a collage of stained colour and expressive line work to form abstract works, leaving the viewer to ponder what sort of an emotion nostalgia is.
